Porto – Gastronomy Tour

Petiscos, Port & Passion: Porto Gastronomy Walking Tour

«Forget tiny tapas. In northern Portugal, we eat petiscos—generous, rich, and deeply comforting dishes meant for sharing with close friends. On this culinary journey, we steer you far away from the commercial tourist traps and take you deep into the authentic neighborhood taverns (tascas) where generations of locals have eaten.»

Conquer the Legendary Francesinha: Try Porto’s ultimate culinary masterpiece—a monster of a sandwich stacked with layers of cured meats, bathed in a secret, spicy beer-and-tomato sauce, and melted cheese.

The Atlantic’s Finest: Taste perfectly crispy Bolinhos de Bacalhau (traditional codfish cakes) and discover why the Portuguese claim to have over 365 ways to cook salted cod—one for every day of the year.

Master the Art of Port Wine: End your journey learning how to pair the perfect glass of sweet, barrel-aged Port wine with intense local cheeses and artisanal chocolates.

Frequently asked questions

1. What is the difference between a Spanish «Tapa» and a Portuguese «Petisco»?

While both are meant for sharing, tapas are often smaller, bite-sized snacks served alongside a drink. Portuguese petiscos are essentially smaller portions of hearty, home-cooked meals (like stews, meats, and seafood bakes) designed to be passed around the table with plenty of bread to soak up the sauces.

2. Is the food on this tour suitable for vegetarians or vegans?

Northern Portuguese cuisine is traditionally heavy on pork, seafood, and beef (including local staples like the Francesinha and Bifana). While we can easily accommodate vegetarians with alternative options like local cheeses, mushroom petiscos, and eggs, this tour is not recommended for strict vegans, as traditional tascas rarely have plant-based substitutes for their core dishes.

3. Does the tour cross the river into the Gaia Port wine cellars?

No, this tour stays entirely on the historic Porto side of the river to focus on the city’s local tavern culture. However, our final stop is a specialized tasting room where we sample premium Port wines from the Douro Valley, saving you the steep walk across the bridge!

4. How much food is included? Should I eat lunch/dinner beforehand?

Please do not eat beforehand! This tour includes 4 substantial food stops featuring a mix of sandwiches, savory pastries, hearty shared platters, cheese, and dessert. By the time the 3 hours are up, it will easily replace a very filling lunch or dinner.

5. Are drinks included at every stop?

Yes! At each food stop, a specifically paired local beverage is included—including white Vinho Verde, red Douro wine, local craft beer, and Port wine. Non-alcoholic options (water, juice, soft drinks) are always available upon request.
