Lisbon – Gastronomy Tours

Tour Title: Spices, Seas & Taverns: Lisbon Gastronomy Walking Tour

«Lisbon is a city completely obsessed with food. From the morning scent of fresh cinnamon on warm custard tarts to the evening sizzle of garlic shrimp in century-old taverns, eating here is a lifestyle. But with tourism booming, how do you find the real, family-run tascas that hidden alleys protect? On this culinary crawl, we skip the tourist traps and introduce you to the true flavors of Lisbon.»

The Ultimate Codfish Masterclass: Discover why the Portuguese say they have 1,001 ways to cook salted codfish (bacalhau). Taste the city’s best versions, paired perfectly with a crisp, chilled Vinho Verde.

Sip the Sour Cherry Elixir: Stand on a historic street corner and throw back a shot of Ginjinha—Lisbon’s legendary 19th-century sour cherry liqueur, served straight from the bottle (sometimes in an edible chocolate cup!).

Petiscos & Portuguese Red: Sit down in a local tavern to share platters of Pica-Pau (tender beef strips in a tangy pickle sauce), artisanal cheeses, and rich cured hams paired with robust wines from the Alentejo or Douro regions.

Frequently asked questions

1. What kind of food will we eat, and is it a full meal?

Yes, absolutely come hungry! Over the course of 3 hours, we make 4 distinct culinary stops. You will try a wide variety of local specialties including seafood starters, marinated pork sandwiches or beef platters, aged cheeses, traditional liqueur, local wines, and an artisanal pastry. Combined, the food easily equals a very heavy lunch or dinner.

2. I am a vegetarian/vegan or have a gluten allergy. Can I do this tour?

Northern Portuguese cuisine is traditionally heavy on pork, seafood, and beef (including local staples like the Francesinha and Bifana). While we can easily accommodate vegetarians with alternative options like local cheeses, mushroom petiscos, and eggs, this tour is not recommended for strict vegans, as traditional tascas rarely have plant-based substitutes for their core dishes.

3. Is there a lot of steep uphill walking on the gastronomy tour?

Good news for your legs and your appetite! Unlike our Historic Tour which climbs into the steep hills of Alfama, our Gastronomy Tour takes place almost entirely in the flatter downtown grid (Baixa) and the gentle slopes of Mouraria. There are very few stairs, making it a much easier, more relaxed walk focused entirely on the food.

4. Are all alcoholic beverages and drinks included in the ticket price?

Yes! A specifically curated drink pairing is included at every single food stop (including local beer, Vinho Verde, Portuguese red wine, Ginjinha liqueur, and Port wine). If you do not drink alcohol, high-quality non-alcoholic options such as local juices, mineral water, and soft drinks are readily available at no extra cost.

5. Where does the tour meet and end?

We meet in the heart of downtown at Praça da Figueira, right by the equestrian statue. The tour wraps up near Rossio or Chiado, placing you right in the center of the city with fantastic access to taxis, the metro, and major hotels.
